Houston Completes Sweep of No. 24 WSU

HOUSTON -- Houston Baseball used timely hitting and dominant pitching to complete the sweep of No. 24 Wichita State with a 6-5 win in Game 1 and a 3-1 victory in Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader at Schroeder Park.
With the wins, the Cougars improved to 25-15 on the year and 10-5 in American Athletic Conference play, while Wichita State fell to 26-12 and 4-8 in league play.
Houston captured its seventh weekend series win and third in conference play.
HOUSTON HITS

Houston out hit Wichita State, 10-8, highlighted by two home runs. The Cougars were led offensively by Lael Lockhart Jr.'s 4-for-4 day with two RBI, while Tyler Bielamowicz belted his first home run of the year to drive in two RBI. Grayson Padgett went 3-for3 with two runs and the biggest RBI of the day on his walk off, solo home run to open the seventh.

Houston starter Aaron Fletcher went 6.0 innings, allowing just four earned runs on eight hits with one walk, while striking out seven. He was relieved in the seventh with the score tied 5-5.
Senior Joey Pulido pitched a scoreless seventh with one strikeout to earn his fourth win of the year, improving to 4-1.
KEY INNINGS
2nd | Houston jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second after Grayson Padgett and Cooper Coldiron reached on back-to-back singles and scored on a sac fly by Tucker Redden and an RBI-single by Lael Lockhart.
3rd | Wichita State used four hits, including two doubles and a two-run home run to take a 4-2 lead on Houston in the third.
The Cougars quickly responded in the latter half of the inning as Joe Davis led off the frame with a walk and came around to score on Tyler Bielamowicz's first home run of the year -- a two-run shot to left field to tie the game at 4-4.
4th | Wichita State took advantage of a Houston error, which led to a run following an RBI-single in the fourth to give the Shockers a 5-4 lead.
6th | Houston tied the game back up at 5-5 in the sixth on an RBI-double into left center by Lael Lockhart Jr., scoring pinch runner Landon Etzel from first base.
7th | Grayson Padgett led off the bottom of the seventh and ended it with one swing as he belted his second walk off home run of the year, a solo shot to right field for the 6-5 win.
GAME 2: HOUSTON 3, WICHITA STATE 1

Houston out hit Wichita State, 7-5, in Game 2, led by senior Cooper Coldiron, who had two doubles and drove in two RBI, the eventual game-winners. Senior Connor Hollis added a hit and RBI, while Tyler Bielamowicz tallied two hits.

Houston starter Ryan Randel went 5.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits with three walks with a strikeout in his ninth start of the year. He managed to hold a strong WSU offense to just four hits before handing the ball over to senior reliever Kyle Ott.
Ott earned the win, striking out one and walking one as the pitcher of record. With that , he improved to 3-0.
Sophomore reliever Carter Henry was lights out in his final 3.0 innings of work, surrendering just one hit and one walk with five strikeouts to collect his fifth save of the year and second on the weekend.
KEY INNINGS
5th | Wichita State took a 1-0 lead in the fifth following a lead off walk, single and an RBI-groundout.
Houston responded in true fashion with a run of its own led by seniors Cooper Coldiron and Connor Hollis. Coldiron opend the frame with a lead off double and Connor Hollis plated him with a two-out, RBI-single to make it a 1-1 game in the fifth.
6th | Cooper Coldiron comes up big in the sixth when he plates Jared Triolo, who singled and Grayson Padgett, who walked with his second double of the day -- a two-run, two-bagger to give Houston the 3-1 lead.
ON DECK
Houston will hit the road for four games next week when it travels to Austin to take on Texas at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on the Longhorn Network. The Cougars will then embark on a three-game series at East Carolina over the weekend, set to begin Friday at 5:30 p.m. CT, continue at 3 p.m. CT Saturday and wrap at 10:30 a.m. CT Sunday.
