CARROLLTON, Texas â€" University of Houston senior Megan Thothong posted a score of 147 Monday during the first day of the Bruzzy Challenge to stand in a tie for third place at Maridoe Golf Club.
Thothong opened the tournament with an even-par 72 on the 6,335-yard, par-72 course, using a strong finish. Although she stood at 3-over through 11 holes, the Dallas native enjoyed birdies on four of her last seven holes, including back-to-back efforts on Nos. 17-18 to lead the Cougars in the morning session.
As a team, the 26th-ranked Cougars posted a score of 605 to stand in third place after 36 holes against a field with six of the nation's Top-50 programs. No. 38 Texas A&M finished the first day in first at 591, while No. 34 Iowa State was in second at 595.
Following the Cougars, No. 42 BYU (606), TCU (607), Missouri (608), No. 49 San Diego State (610), No. 50 Texas Tech (615), Boston College (618) and SMU (621) rounded out the Top-10 leaders.
Junior Leonie Harm was tied for 20th at 152, while senior Allie Andersen was tied for 26th at 153, joining junior Maddy Rayner, who was competing as an individual. Sophomore Amanda Elich was tied for 43rd at 156 with senior Courtney Tibiletti tied for 50th at 158.
Texas A&M teammates Maddie Szeryk and Ariana Saenz were tied for the individual lead at 2-under 142. Thothong joined TCU's Greta Bruner in a tie for third at 147, while Iowa State teammates Celia Barquin Arozamena, Chayanit Wangmahaporn and Alana Campbell and SMU's Kenzie Wright were tied for fifth at 148.
FINAL ROUND on TUESDAY
Tuesday's Final Round tees off with an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start. The Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from Texas A&M and Iowa State.
Thothong will be in the first group off No. 1 with Harm (second group off No. 1), Elich (No. 2), Tibiletti (No. 3) and Andersen (second group off No. 4) following.
