Don Sanders Cup Evened with Loss at SHSU

HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- Houston Baseball wasn't able to overcome early runs by Sam Houston State as it fell 8-3 on Wednesday in Game 2 of the Don Sanders Cup at Don Sanders Stadium.
With the loss, the Cougars fell to 22-15 overall and Sam Houston State, with the win, improved to 26-12.
The two teams will meet once more on Tuesday, May 1 at Constellation Field in Sugar Land, Texas. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
HOUSTON HITS
- Houston and Sam Houston State now tied, 1-1, in the Don Sanders Cup series.
- Connor Hollis has extended his on-base streak to 10 games.
- Tyler Bielamowicz walks in the ninth to keep his on-base streak alive at 10 games.
- Tucker Redden tied his career high with three hits.
- The Cougars tallied its 14th game with 10+ hits, collecting 11 hits Wednesday.

Houston collected 11 hits on the night, led by Tucker Redden and Jared Triolo's three-hit outing. Redden joined Joe Davis and Connor Hollis with an RBI. Triolo, Drew Minter and Cooper Coldiron each scored a run.

Houston starter Fred Villarreal went just 1.0 inning, allowing two earned runs on two hits with a walk and hit batter. He would suffer the loss, falling to 0-1 on the year in his first start of 2018.
Brayson Hurdsman would take over and last 3.0 innings, surrendering three runs on five hits and one walk with two strikeouts.
Hunter Edwards relived Hurdsman in the fifth and lasted 1.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits with three walks.
Nolan Bond took over in the sixth and worked the Cougars out of a jam, inducing an inning-ending double play. He finished with 2.2 innings, allowing just one hit, no runs with one walk and a strikeout.
KEY INNINGS
1st | Houston jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first when Joe Davis doubled in Jared Triolo, after he reached on a single.
Sam Houston State responded with three runs in the latter half of the inning on two hits and three free passes.
3rd | Houston made it interesting in the third but would strand bases loaded in the top half before Sam Houston extended its lead to 5-1 with two hits.
4th | Tucker Redden uses an RBI-single to plate Cooper Coldiron, who reached on a fielder's choice to make it a 5-2 game in the fourth.
Sam Houston State added another run to its column with a pair of hits and an RBI-single.
6th | The Bearkats uses a hit, two walks, a hit by pitch and sac fly to score two more runs and extend their lead to 8-2 in the sixth.
8th | Houston scored its third run of the game in the eighth on an RBI-single by Connor Hollis, plating Drew Minter, who walked.
ON DECK
The Cougars will then return to Schroeder Park for a big weekend series against American Athletic Conference newcomer Wichita State.
The series will begin on Friday, April 20 at 6:30 p.m., continue with Game 2 at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, April 21 and wrap at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 22.
