Houston Earns 3-1 Win over No. 24 WSU

HOUSTON -- Houston Baseball jumped out to an early lead and starter Trey Cumbie held No. 24 Wichita State in check as the Cougars went on to earn a 3-1 win in Game 1 of the weekend series over the Shockers at Schroeder Park on Friday.
With the win, Houston improved to 23-15 overall and 8-5 in American Athletic Conference play, while Wichita State fell to 26-10 and 4-6 in league action.
SCHEDULE NOTE: Due to the threat of inclement weather Saturday, Houston Baseball's game vs. Wichita State has been moved to Sunday. The two teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
Game 1: 1 pm (7 innings)
Game 2: 40 minutes following end of Game 1 (9 innings)

Houston out hit Wichita State, 7-5 as six different Cougars registered a hit. Leading the way with an RBI and a base hit was Joe Davis and Tyler Bielamowicz, while Jared Triolo led all hitters with two base hits and two runs, while Connor Hollis had a hit and scored a run.

Houston starter Trey Cumbie was lights out as he tossed 8.0 innings, allowing just one run on one walk with five hits to accompany his nine strikeouts.
Cumbie managed to retire 10 Shocker hitters in a row between innings 3-6 and of those 10 outs, he struck out six to maintain Houston's 3-1 lead.
The southpaw went on to collect his fourth win of the year, improving to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in league play.
Sophomore closer Carter Henry shut the door in the ninth to collect his fourth save of 2018 and register his 11th straight scoreless inning over a span of nine relief appearances.
KEY INNINGS
1st | Houston jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on a pair of hits and a Wichita State defensive miscue. Connor Hollis led off the frame with a walk, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a throwing error by the shortstop, moving Jared Triolo to second on the play. Tyler Bielamowicz then came up big with a two-out RBI-single, scoring Triolo for the two-run lead.
3rd | Wichita State used three hits to plate one run to trim Houston's lead to 2-1.
The Cougars responded with a run of their own when Joe Davis drove in Jared Triolo, who doubled, with an RBI-single into right field for the 3-1 advantage.

SCHEDULE UPDATE: Saturday's game has been moved to Sunday.
Houston and Wichita State will continue its three-game series on Sunday with a scheduled doubleheader, set to begin at 1 p.m.
