HOUSTON -- Houston Baseball begins its defense of its 2017 American Athletic Conference title when it opens league play by hosting Memphis in a three-game series at Schroeder Park this weekend.
The Cougars and Tigers are set to begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday, continue with Game 2 at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and wrap at 1 p.m. Sunday.

HOUSTON HITS
- Houston enters the weekend series with a 13-8 record and is riding a five-game win streak.
- The Cougars are coming off back-to-back midweek wins over Lamar (3-1) and Prairie View A&M (9-2).
- Houston will look to defend its 2017 American regular-season title this weekend. The Cougars were selected first in the 2018 Preseason poll.
- As a team, Houston is hitting .256 with seven home runs, 35 doubles and 90 RBI.
- Three Cougars are hitting over the .300 mark, led by Joe Davis' .364 average and 28 hits. He is followed by Jared Triolo and Lael Lockharr Jr., who each own a .325 average with 27 and 25 hits, respectively.
- Cooper Coldiron paces Houston with 19 RBI, while Lockhart follows with 16 and Davis with 15. Connor Hollis has team-high 18 runs scored.
- The pitching staff owns a 3.08 ERA with 197 strikeouts to 69 walks in 199.0 innings. Opponents are hitting .228 against the Cougars.
- Saturday starter Aaron Fletcher leads the staff with a 1.24 ERA and is 3-0 through five starts.
- Friday starter and Preseason American Pitcher of the Year Trey Cumbie has tallied 43 strikeouts in 30.1 innings and is 1-1 with a 2.97 ERA. He is coming off a complete-game shutout win with 10 strikeouts in his last start vs. New Mexico.

MEMPHIS
- Memphis will enter conference play with an 8-13 overall record and is coming off a 14-0 midweek win over Mississippi Valley, but dropped its last series, 2-1, to North Florida on the road last weekend.
- The Tigers were selected to finish seventh in the 2018 Preseason poll after earning 30 wins in 2017.
- As a team, Memphis is hitting .253 with 11 home runs, 35 doubles and 88 RBI.
- Leading the way offensively is Tyler Webb with a .354 average, 28 hits and 14 runs.
- Kyle Ouellette leads the Tigers with 17 RBI and is second in average with a .333 clip.
- The pitching staff owns a 3.89 ERA with 196 strikeouts and 76 walks through 183.0 innings.
- RHP Riley Cabral will start Friday and is 3-2 with a 3.62 ERA. He has fanned 24 in 27.1 innings through six appearances and five starts.
- RHP Jonathan Bowlan will start Saturday with a 3.12 ERA and an 0-3 record in five starts. He paces the staff with 36 strikeouts in 26.0 innings.
- RHP Alex Hicks will make the start on Sunday with a 2-3 record and a 5.68 ERA in five starts. He has fanned 21 in 25.1 innings.
