BASEBALL
Last Week
Houston Baseball went 3-1 last week. After falling 7-6 at McNeese, the Cougars defeated New Mexico, 1-0, on Friday before picking up 4-3 (11 innings) and 6-2 victories over Columbia over the weekend to move to 11-8 on the season.

With the loss to McNeese, the Cougars and Cowboys split the midweek series after Houston won 13-9 in the first meeting at Schroeder Park … Against New Mexico, junior Trey Cumbie recorded 10 strikeouts in a complete-game shutout … For his efforts, Cumbie was named to The American Weekly Honor Roll … Junior Joe Davis led the Cougars with a 3-for-4 effort, as Houston outhit the Lobos, 11-4 … On Saturday against Columbia, sophomore Lael Lockhart Jr. scored the game-winning run with a walk-off, RBI double in the bottom of the 11th inning … The walkoff win was the fourth for Houston on the season … On Sunday, Houston used a four-run second inning to pull away from Columbia to sweep the weekend at Schroeder Park.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Last Week
No. 19/21 Houston Men's Basketball defeated San Diego State, 67-65, in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament before falling 64-63 in the Second Round to No. 7/7 Michigan to end the season with a 27-8 record.
Notes
Against SDSU, senior guard Rob Gray drove the lane and banked in a layup with just 1.1 seconds remaining to lift the Cougars to their first NCAA Tournament victory in more than 30 years … Gray finished with a career-high 39 points and added a personal-best nine rebounds in the win … Against Michigan, Gray totaled 23 points and 10 rebounds in a double-double effort … Gray's 62 points in the first two games are the most since Steph Curry grabbed the national spotlight with Davidson in 2008 … For the 20th time in school history and the first time since 2010, Houston competed in the NCAA Tournament … The 2017-18 squad was the sixth in school history to enjoy 27+ wins in a single season.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Last Week
Houston Women's Basketball fell 65-58 at South Dakota in the First Round of the WNIT to close the season with a 20-12 record.
Notes
The Cougars were led offensively and on the glass by Serithia Hawkins, who scored a game-high 17 points and pulled down a career-best 16 rebounds to register her seventh double-double of the season and the 18th of her career … With the WNIT berth, Houston made its first appearance in the postseason since the 2010-11 season … The WNIT bid was the fifth all-time for the Cougars, and they now hold a 5-6 record in the tournament.

At McNeese, junior Savannah Heebner tossed three scoreless innings of relief, retiring all nine batters she faced with three strikeouts to pick up the win … Senior shortstop Mariah Garcia highlighted the offense with a three-run home run … On Saturday in the Houston Round Robin, freshman Tierrah Williams hit a pinch-hit, walk-off grand slam in a 6-2 victory over Eastern Kentucky … The grand slam was the first for the Cougars since Heebner hit one against UConn on April 9, 2017, as part of a multi-home run performance … On Sunday, Heebner improved to 10-2 in the circle in a 6-4 win over EKU … Freshman designated player Aspen Howie finished a perfect 4-for-4 with a double, home run, two singles, three RBI and three runs scored … Howie's performance is the second 4-for-4 showing for the Cougars on the season, as redshirt junior Sarah Barker went 4-for-4 against No. 15/18 Ole Miss on Feb. 16.

Houston Swimming & Diving closed the season at the NCAA Swimming Championships … Peyton Kondis, Zarena Brown and Ksenia Yukova all represented the Cougars, marking the swimmers to qualify for the program since 2009 … For complete results, click here.

Houston defeated Louisiana (4-0) and UT Rio Grande Valley (4-0) in a doubleheader on Monday … In both matches, the the Cougars swept double point … Against Louisiana, Sveva Mazzari, Lauren Alter and Alison Mills all picked up victories … Against UTRGV, Tsveta Dimitrova, Ana Glumac and Mazzari collected wins … Houston picked up another sweep at North Florida on Thursday … After taking the double point, Mazzari, Constandena Nicolaou and Dimitrova reminded wins, respectively … Houston lost just its second match of the spring season against defending American Champions USF, 4-2, on Friday.

Jack Thomas, who was sidelined during the 2017 season due to an injury, returned to the javelin and won the event with a heave of 234-10 (71.58m), a person best and improves on his second-best mark in program history … Houston swept the men's and women's 4x100-meter relays … The men began their National Championship title defense with the team of Mario Burke, Elijah Hall, John Lewis III and Cameron Burrell running a nation-leading 39.22, while the women's team of Justice Henderson, Brianne Bethel, Essance Sample and Samiyah Samuels ran the second-fastest time in the NCAA at 45.61 … In the distance, Ebony White and Maria Gonzales finished 1-2 in the women's 1,500-meter run, running 4:47.30 and 4:47.72, respectively … Houston followed the distance event by sweeping the men's and women's straight-track hurdles … Competing for the first time in the outdoor season, freshman Naomi Taylor won the 100-meter hurdles in a wind-aided 13.34, while Amere Lattin won the 110-meter even in a wind-aided 13.93 … Lattin picked up his second victory of the day, winning the 200-meter dash in a wind-aided 21.30 … Houston also swept the men's and women's 400-meter dash … Bethel won the women's in 56.53, while on the men's side freshmen Jemiyah Franklin and Quivell Jordan finished 1-2 in 48.10 and 48.19, respectively … Senior Jared Kerr won the long jump with a wind-aided leap of 24-4.5 (7.43m), while Antwan Dickerson took second at 23-10.0 (7.26m) … The men picked up another 1-2 finish 100-meter dash with Mario Burke winning in 10.24 and Cameron Burrell taking second in 10.32 … In the middle-distance, Blake Contreras won in the 800-meter run in 1:57.02 … Houston's men capped the running events with a victory in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:17.83 … The Cougars finished the afternoon with a sweep of the podium in the discus with Kenneth Sessums (160-09 (49.01m)), while Zach Oliva took second in (159-10 (48.74m)) and Jose Rodriguez (156â€"07 (47.74m)) placed third … For complete results, click here … Prior to the meet, Houston sprinter Elijah Hall was named to the Men's Post-Indoor Watch List for The Bowerman … Hall found himself on the watch list after one of the most successful sprint campaigns in NCAA Indoor Championship history … The native of Katy, Texas, opened the championships with Houston's first-ever NCAA Championship in the 60-meter dash, running the program's second-fastest time at 6.52 … In the 200-meter dash, Hall cruised one-lap around the track in 20.02 to clock the second-fastest time in world history in the indoor 200 … Hall's time broke Wallace Spearmon's 13-year old mark of 20.10 and set new American, Collegiate and NCAA Championship records in the process … Hall earned First-Team All-America honors for each event, becoming the ninth Cougar to claim the award in the 60 and just the second to claim the award in the 200 … Hall scored 20 points for the Cougars in the championship meet, which would have placed him 10th overall in the team standings by himself.
