HOUSTON - For the first time in more than 30 years, the University of Houston Men's Basketball program was ranked in both national polls released Monday.
Under the leadership of Head Coach Kelvin Sampson, the Cougars, who have won their last five games and seven of the last eight, earned 263 points in the latest Associated Press poll to rank No. 23. It was the first time since Dec. 12, 2005, that the Cougars were ranked in the Associated Press poll.
Shortly after the release of the AP poll, the Cougars checked in at No. 23 in the USA TODAY Coaches poll with 119 points.
It marked the first time since the 1983-84 Houston team finished No. 5 in both the AP and UPI rankings that the Cougars were ranked in both national polls. Houston was ranked No. 25 midway through the 1992-93 season and was again ranked early in the 2005-06 season in the AP polls.
Houston earned its ranking after a 67-62 win over No. 5/5 Cincinnati on Thursday inside H&PE Arena. The Cougars followed that with a dominating 80-59 win over Temple in which they scored the first 15 points of the game and never allowed the Owls to move closer than 13 points.
With a 21-5 overall record, the Cougars became the 22nd team in school history to reach 21+ wins in a single season and are tied with No. 13/12 Wichita State for second in the league, only one game behind league leader No. 11/11 Cincinnati.
