HOUSTON â€" Houston Baseball junior Trey Cumbie wasted no time earning national honors, being named a National Pitcher of the Week by Collegiate Baseball, the organization announced Monday.
Cumbie struck out a career-high 12 Holy Cross hitters in just 5.1 innings of work, while allowing just one walk. The 12 strikeouts was his second 10+ strikeout game of his career, surpassing his previous high of 11, which came at Tulane in 2017.
The southpaw managed to strike out the side in back-to-back innings (2nd & 3rd). Cumbie allowed just three hits, two of which came in the first inning.
Cumbie was a Preseason Collegiate Baseball All-American and a 2017 All-American by the organization. He was tabbed the National Pitcher of the Month (May) in 2017 by NCBWA.
The Cougars earned a walk off win on Sunday to cap an Opening Weekend series victory over Holy Cross.
