NEW ORLEANS â€" University of Houston senior Megan Thothong fired a 1-under 71 on Sunday to lead the Cougars during the First Round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship at English Turn Golf & Country Club.
As a team, the Cougars were tied with LSU for 12th with a score of 298 in a tournament field, which featured 10 top-50 programs.
Thothong started her day off No. 1 on the 6,239-yard, par-72 course with three straight pars before sinking her first birdie of the day on the 311-yard, par-4 fourth hole. She drained another birdie two holes later but suffered a double bogey on No. 9 to move back to even par.
After seven straight pars to open her back nine, the Dallas native made her third and final birdie of the day on the 157-yard, par-3 17th hole to join a group in a tie for ninth after the first day.
Junior Leonie Harm and sophomore Amanda Elich were tied for 35th after posting 75s, while senior Courtney Tibiletti was tied for 57th at 77. Senior Allie Andersen was tied for 84th at 82.
Florida held the first-day team lead with a score of 5-under 283. Michigan State stood in second at 284 with North Carolina (292), USC (293), NC State (294) and UCF (294) rounding out the top-six leaders.
UCF's Kaeli Jones opened the tournament with a 66 and held the First-Round individual lead by one stroke over Michigan State's Allyson Geer. Florida's Sierra Brooks and NC State's Cecily Overbey were tied for third at 69.

SECOND ROUND on MONDAY
For Monday's Second Round, the Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from Kansas and South Alabama.
Andersen begins the day for the Cougars at 9:45 a.m., Monday, off No. 10 with Tibiletti (9:54 a.m.), Elich (10:03 a.m.), Harm (10:12 a.m.) and Thothong (10:21 a.m.) following.
UP NEXT
Following the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship, the Cougars play host to their own The Dickson on Feb. 26-27 at The Woodlands Country Club in The Woodlands, Texas.
From there, Houston will compete at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational on March 13-14 at Kaheohe Klipper Golf Club in Oahu, Hawai'i.
