HOUSTON – Continuing its record-setting season, the University of Houston Men's Basketball program faces Coppin State at 3 p.m., Sunday, inside Fertitta Center in a game presented by Maintenance Supply Headquarters.
The Cougars – who are ranked No. 20 in the latest USA TODAY Coaches' poll and at No. 21 in the most recent Associated Press poll – enter this weekend's game on the heels of a 60-50 win over Utah State on Thursday inside the Fertitta Center.
Despite trailing by as many as 13 points in the second half against the Aggies, the Cougars used a stellar defensive effort to limit Utah State to only 19 second-half points. The Cougars' backcourt of senior point guard Galen Robinson Jr. and senior guard Corey Davis Jr. held Utah State guard Sam Merrill to only six points, more than 14 points below his season average.
Junior guard Armoni Brooks led the Cougars with 15 points and five 3-pointers, all in the second half. The Round Rock, Texas, native leads Houston with 15.7 points and 7.2 rebounds per game and is one of only two players to rank among the American Athletic Conference Top-10 leaders in both scoring and rebounding.
In the latest NCAA NET national rankings through Dec. 20, the Cougars rose to No. 7, trailing only Duke, Virginia, Michigan, Kansas, Tennessee and Wisconsin. This new system replaced the RPI as the primary sorting tool for evaluating teams by the NCAA Basketball Committee.
PLAYER-to-COACH CONNECTIONS
While this will be the first time Houston Head Coach Kelvin Sampson has faced Coppin State Head Coach Juan Dixon as coaches, it's not the first time their two teams have squared off.
Dixon was an All-American guard at Maryland from 1998 to 2002. Dixon's Maryland team enjoyed a 68-60 win over Sampson's Oklahoma team in College Park, Md., on Feb. 24, 2001, in the first of two meetings.
However, Sampson's 2001-02 team claimed a 72-56 win over Dixon's second-ranked Maryland squad in Norman, Okla., on Dec. 21, 2001, shortly before the Terrapins captured the NCAA national championship.
