HOUSTON – The University of Houston Men's Basketball program begins a new era when it opens the Fertitta Center against No. 18/21 Oregon on Saturday night.
With a $60-million renovation following the 2016-17 regular season, the facility became the Fertitta Center and opens play on the 49th anniversary of the first game in Hofheinz Pavilion.
The transformation was made possible by a $20-million gift from University of Houston System Board of Regents Chairman Tilman J. Fertitta and his family.
Despite their home-away-from home, the Cougars enjoyed tremendous success inside H&PE Arena, posting a 19-1 record there with wins in each of the last 19 games. The Cougars' current 19-game home winning streak is tied for the nation's second-longest active streak.
Houston enters this weekend's opener on the heels of a tough 58-53 win over UT Rio Grande Valley on Wednesday night. Senior point guard Galen Robinson Jr. drained a 3-pointer from the right baseline with less than 50 seconds remaining to break a 50-50 tie, while senior guard Corey Davis Jr. led all players with 23 points – all in the second half – for his second straight 20-point effort.
This season, Davis leads the Cougars and ranks second in the American Athletic Conference with 20.0 points per game. Junior guard Armoni Brooks stands second on the team with 14.0 points per game and ranks as one of the league's elite 3-pointer shooters but made his presence known on the defensive side Wednesday, grabbing a career-high 12 rebounds.
