Houston Men’s Basketball Welcomes J’Wan Roberts
11/15/2018 9:33:00 AM | Men's Basketball
Shoemaker High School forward becomes first member of Cougars’ signing class
Measuring 6-foot-7 and weighing 200 pounds, Roberts, who hails from St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, will have four years of eligibility with the Cougars beginning with the 2019-20 season.
"The first time I saw J'Wan, I said 'that kid fits us.' I just liked him. He is a position-less athlete. He can play anywhere, and he has a developing offensive game," Head Coach Kelvin Sampson said. "J'Wan is one of those athletic kids that has the WOW factor. He will create a lot of oooohs and aaaahs inside the Fertitta Center."
Roberts – whose first name is pronounced Jay-wan – was listed as a three-star recruit by 247Sports and Rivals and ranked as the No. 19 senior in the state of Texas by 247Sports.
Playing for Head Coach Brandon Gilbert, Roberts was honored as the District 8-A Defensive Player of the Year as a junior in 2017-18. He averaged 14.0 points, 8.2 rebounds and 3.8 blocked shots per game while hitting more than 58 percent of his shots from the field.
"On the court, J'Wan is a great rebounder and a great shot blocker, and you can't teach that. He can step out to the 3-point line and shoot and stretch the defense," Gilbert said. "J'wan is a fun-loving, giving young man who smiles all the time. If you know him, you love him. If you don't know him, you will learn to love him."
Roberts is the first member of the Cougars' signing class with additional announcements coming soon.
