Junior guard Armoni Brooks leads all with 20 points for first consecutive 20-point efforts of career
HOUSTON – University of Houston junior guard Armoni Brooks posted his second consecutive 20-point game, leading the Cougars to a 79-68 win over Rice on Wednesday in HP&E Arena during the Men Against Breast Cancer Cougar Cup in a game presented by Maintenance Supply Headquarters.
Brooks, who tied his career high with 24 points in the season-opening win over Alabama A&M on Saturday, paced the Cougars with 20 points and five rebounds after going 8-of-14 from the field, including 4-of-5 from long range.
Houston outrebounded Rice 40-32 and attempted 12 more free throws than the Owls on the way to its 17th straight home victory inside HP&E Arena. That ties as the nation's third-longest active home winning streak.
Rice jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first three minutes, but the Cougars responded with a 13-0 run over the next four minutes to build a lead they would never relinquish. Brooks led the Cougars during that run with eight of his 20 points.
Houston held a 40-29 lead at halftime and led by as many as 18 points before the Owls moved to within 66-60 following Robert Martin's free throw with 2:56 remaining. However, that would be as close as Rice would get.
Senior guard Corey Davis Jr. made a jumper in the lane and, following a Rice miss, freshman guard Nate Hinton buried a jumper and added a dunk after a Cedrick Alley Jr. steal for a 72-60 lead with 1:56 left in the game.
Davis finished with 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting and tied with senior point guard Galen Robinson Jr. for game-high honors with six assists. Hinton finished with a career-high 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field and 5-of-6 shooting from the free throw line, while Robinson added 15 points.
Ako Adams led Rice with 19 points and five assists, while Jack Williams finished with 11 points. Drew Peterson totaled 10 points with Josh Parrish adding a team-high five rebounds.
