SAN MARCOS, Texas – Thanks to its low round of the season, the University of Houston Women's Golf program surged into third with a score of 6-under 858 following the Final Round at the Jim West Challenge at Kissing Tree Golf Club.
A day after senior All-American Leonie Harm tied her school-record low round with a 65, the Cougars took advantage of 17 birdies and an eagle for a 5-under 279 to move up four spots in the final standings.
Harm finished with a 2-under 70 on the 6,185-yard course and tied for third overall at 6-under 210 for her first Top-10 finish of the season and the 15th of her career. The Gerlingen, Germany, native overcame a bogey early in her round with sank three straight birdies on Nos. 16-18.
TCU captured the team title with a score of 11-under 853 to finish one stroke ahead of Florida State. Oklahoma (863), Mississippi (865), host Texas State (871), Missouri (873), Memphis (873), Miami (Fla.) (877) and Mississippi State (883) rounded out the Top10.
Freshman Maria Jose Martinez led the way for the Cougars in the Final Round and tied for 12th at 2-under 214. The Alvarado, Mexico, native, led the Cougars with eight birdies on the way to a personal-best 67. Starting on No. 9, Martinez endured a bogey on the par-4 10th hole but wasted little time in regrouping.
She enjoyed her first birdie of the day on the par-3 12th hole and, following a par on No. 13, sank birdies on three of the next four holes. After three straight pars, she made three straight birdies on Nos. 3-5 before adding her final birdie of the day on the par-4 seventh hole.
Freshman Hannah Screen posted second even-par round with a 72 Monday and tied for 23rd at 218. Senior Maddy Rayner was steady, finishing with a birdie and eagle and only one bogey on the way to a 70 in the Final Round and tying for 26th at 219.
Senior Tatiana Pineda tied for 51st at 226.
Florida State's Frida Kinhult earned medalist honors at 14-under 202, while Miami (Fla.)'s Renate Grimstad finished second at 207. Harm joined Jess Yuen (Missouri) and Sofia Garcia (Texas Tech) in a tie for third.
It took three tries, but the Cougars finally enjoyed their first 54-hole tournament this season. Houston's visits to the Mason Rudolph Championship (Sept. 23-25) and Maryb S. Kauth Invitational (Oct. 14-16) each were shortened to 36 holes due to wet weather.
UP NEXT
Following the Jim West Challenge, Houston closes out the fall campaign at the Baylor Invitational. That three-day, 54-hole tournament begins Nov. 2 at Club Campestre in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico.
From there, the Cougars will enjoy their winter break before opening the spring season at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship at English Turn Country Club in New Orleans on Feb. 17-19.
