HOUSTON – During its history, Hofheinz Pavilion was the site of more than 700 Houston Men's Basketball games with the Cougars emerging victorious in 537 of those contests.
So, which coaches and student-athletes enjoyed the most wins in front of Cougar fans in Hofheinz Pavilion? Let's take a look at what our research has shown.
With more than 30 years at the helm of the Cougars' bench, legendary Hall of Fame Coach Guy V. Lewis enjoyed 224 wins inside Hofheinz Pavilion to set the facility record among all coaches and student-athletes.
Lewis led the Cougars to four undefeated home seasons inside Hofheinz Pavilion (18-0, 1972-73; 16-0, 1969-70; 15-0, 1983-84; 14-0, 1982-83) and a 43-game home winning streak inside the facility from Jan. 30, 1982 to Feb. 1, 1985.
Current Head Coach Kelvin Sampson (15-0, 2017-18) and Alden Pasche (10-0, 1949-50) are the only other Houston head coaches to lead their respective teams to perfect records in front of the hometown fans for an entire season.
Sampson accomplished his feat at Health & PE Arena on the campus of nearby Texas Southern University a year ago, while Pasche led his team at Public School Field House.
Sampson posted a 36-17 record inside Hofheinz Pavilion during his first three years and will soon become the first coach to lead the Cougars in the Fertitta Center.

On the student-athletes' side, forward Michael Young led all players with 59 wins and only three losses inside Hofheinz Pavilion during his career from 1980 to 1984. As a member of the Cougars' legendary Phi Slama Jama teams, Young was a part of four NCAA Tournament teams, including back-to-back NCAA Final Fours in 1983 and 1984.
Young also holds the school's overall record with 109 victories during his career.
Forward Charles Thomson was a close second with a 56-9 record in Hofheinz Pavilion from 1974 to 1978. Hall of Honor inductee Otis Birdsong and Reid Gettys tied for third with 53 wins during their careers. Birdsong compiled a 53-9 mark from 1973 to 1977, while Gettys enjoyed a 53-4 home record.
