HOUSTON - In a game sandwiched between two top-10 opponents, the University of Houston Men's Basketball program put forth its top defensive effort of the season, limiting USF to only 40 points in a 63-40 win Sunday inside H&PE Arena in a game presented by Maintenance Supply Headquarters.
The 40 points from USF were the lowest by an opponent since Houston held Rice to only 36 points on Jan. 10, 1987. UH also held the Bulls to only 7.1 percent shooting from beyond the 3-point line, a season low for a Houston opponent. Overall, the Cougars held USF to 31.9 percent shooting (15-of-47), the seventh opponent this season held under 35 percent from the field.
The Cougars were also active on the boards, tying season bests for total rebounds (46) and rebounding advantage (+15).
The win kept Houston a perfect 10-0 inside H&PE Arena as Sunday's win followed a top-10 takedown of No. 7/4 Wichita State and comes with a road trip to No. 9/8 Cincinnati looming Wednesday.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 16-4 overall and 6-2 in American play to stand in third in the league, a half-game behind Wichita State. USF fell to 8-14 overall and 1-9 in American play.
The Cougars also swept the regular-season series against the Bulls after taking a 79-60 win in Tampa, Fla., on Dec. 28, 2017, in the American Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
Houston was led by true freshman Fabian White Jr., who recorded his second career double-double, finishing with 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Junior guard Corey Davis Jr. led all scorers with 17 points, his sixth straight game hitting double digits,
Senior guard Rob Gray led all players with six assists, his sixth game this season with at least five assists, four of which have come in the last five games.
The game was tight for the first 15 minutes but after USF pulled within 19-17 with 4:26 left in the first half, the Cougars closed out the first half on a 14-0 run to take a 33-17 lead into the locker room at the break.
The hot play continued with the Cougars scoring the first three points of the second half, giving Houston a 17-0 run over a 6:47 stretch. The Cougars eventually built as much as a 25-point lead midway through the second half.
USF forward Payton Banks and guard Stephan Jiggetts led the Bulls with 10 points apiece, while center Nicola Scekic grabbed a team-high four rebounds.
