HOUSTON - University of Houston senior guard Rob Gray led all players with 24 points and added five rebounds and five assists, but it would not be enough as the Cougars dropped an 81-72 decision at Tulane on Wednesday inside Fogelman Arena in Devlin Fieldhouse.
Freshman forward Fabian White Jr. tied his career high with 12 rebounds and added four assists and a game-high four blocked shots in the Cougars' second American Athletic Conference loss of the season.
The Cougars grabbed an early lead, but Tulane used a 12-3 run to build a 16-8 lead and eventually took a 41-34 lead into the locker room at the break. Houston was limited to 27.0 percent (10-of-37) from the field in the first half, while the Green Wave connected on 51.7 percent (15-of-29) in the first half.
Houston used an 11-3 run to open the second half and grabbed a 45-44 lead when senior forward Devin Davis buried a jumper with 16:17 left. The two teams went back and forth from there.
The Cougars grabbed a 63-62 lead when Gray sank a layup with 5:35 remaining in the game. Tulane's Ray Ona Embo made a pair of free throws with 4:31 left to give the Green Wave the lead for good and, after a missed Houston 3-pointer, Caleb Daniels's dunk gave Tulane a 66-63 lead with just under four minutes remaining.
White connected on a pair of free throws to move Houston to within 66-65 with 3:41 to go, but a layup from Samir Sehic, a Houston turnover and two free throws by Daniels gave Tulane a 70-65 lead with 2:53 left.
Wednesday's setback came following a long two days of travel. The Cougars were scheduled to leave Houston at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, but the freezing weather and precipitation postponed those plans for a day.
On Wednesday, the team was scheduled to leave the Guy V. Lewis Development Facility at 9:30 a.m., but weather delays at the New Orleans Airport did not allow the team to take off until 2 p.m., with the team finally landing in New Orleans after 3 p.m.
Junior guard and Louisiana native Corey Davis Jr. scored 15 points with four 3-pointers and added a pair of assists, while Devin Davis and sophomore guard Armoni Brooks posted 12 points apiece.
Tulane forward Cameron Reynolds led the Green Wave with 22 points, including six 3-pointers, while guard Jordan Cornish finished with 14 points, four rebounds and a pair of assists. Ona Embo totaled 13 points with six rebounds and six assists in the win.
