HOUSTON â€" Senior sprinter Elijah Hall has been named American Athletic Conference Track Athlete of the Week, while senior jumper Tonye'cia Burks took home the league's Field Athlete of the Week honor, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Hall opened his 2018 season by posting the top time in the world in the men's 60-meter dash at the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational. Hall opened competition with the fastest preliminary time at 6.71, before qualifying for the finals with the quickest time in the semifinals at 6.65. The Katy, Texas, native bettered his personal record in the finals, clocking a 6.60 to post the fastest time worldwide and in the NCAA this season to win the event.
With his top mark, the USTFCCCA projects that Hall has a 99.77 percent chance of reaching the NCAA Indoor Championships in March. The weekly honor is the third for Hall in his career with Houston.
Burks just missed breaking her own school record in the women's triple jump, en route to winning the event at the Hilton Invitational. Burks qualified for the finals with a leap of 41-5.0 (12.62m) on her first attempt, and after a long foul in her third leap, improved to 42-4.75 (12.92m) in her fourth try.
Burks' top jump ranks her seventh in the NCAA this season and gives her the fourth American weekly honor of her career.
