HOUSTON HEAD COACH Ronald Hughey
Opening Statement
"Congratulations again to Geno. Year after year he continues to set the standard for what we all want to achieve. He has a team that plays hard, they understand their roles and they do the things necessary to be successful. I think we were a little shell shocked coming out at the beginning. We expected man and they came out in zone. We struggled with zone and they continued to stay in it. We had a hard time finding rhythm and had a hard time moving the basketball. We didn't play well overall."
On what positives to take out of this game
"They didn't quit. UConn can keep going and he put in some subs that are still McDonald's All-Americans. We continued to play hard in the fourth quarter and we managed to have a double digit quarter, which shows that we played hard. People came off the bench to contribute. You've got to understand that when you prepare like champions, you can play like a champion. Until you do that, you will have inconsistencies. The one thing we can learn from this game is that every little thing matters. I think they cut hard to every ball and pivoted, they made pass fakes and sprinted hard in transition. They all crashed the boards, got back and stayed solid in their roles."
On fighting from behind early
"I wouldn't say it was impossible, because we've won 7 games coming from behind. It definitely made it harder, we just couldn't get in a rhythm. They did a good job getting back in transition. Usually we average seven transition threes, but today we couldn't even get them because they were measuring up to the ball and pushing us 3 to 4 feet off the line."
On moving forward after loss
"I think that is the easy part for them. Knowing today's kids, they are buried in the moment and then they move right past it. Like snapchat, or Instagram; they post a picture and they're moving on to the next picture. I think they'll be able to learn from this game and move on. We'll watch film and practice tomorrow, but after that we'll move on to the next game."
On praise from Coach Auriemma
"That's great for him to say that. The coaches in the American, we call each other even though we have to play each other and say, ‘this is what I see in your team' and ‘this is what I can offer some advice on'. We collaborate because we want the conference to be successful.
