FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- University of Houston senior Megan Thothong drained three birdies on her back nine and finished the First Round with a score of 1-under to tie for 19th and lead the Cougars during the Mason Rudolph Championship.
Starting the fall season on No. 10, Thothong bogeyed her first hole of the season but rallied with eight straight pars to close out her first nine holes on the 6,335-yard, par-72 layout at Vanderbilt Legends Club.
She opened her back nine with birdies on two of the first three holes and added another birdie on the 389-yard, par-4 sixth hole.
As a team, the Cougars posted a score of even-par 288 to stand in seventh.
Junior and All-American Athletic Conference honoree Leonie Harm and senior Ivon Reijers were tied for 24th at 72. Harm led the Cougars with four birdies in Friday's First Round, including two of her final three holes.
Senior Courtney Tibiletti was tied for 36th with a 73. Making her first appearance since 2015 after sitting out a year ago as a redshirt, junior Yuka Kajiki was tied for 63rd at 76.
Arkansas held the first-day team lead at 15-under 273 to hold a two-stroke advantage over host Vanderbilt (275). Arizona State (277), Alabama (284), Northwestern (285) and Auburn (285) rounded out the top-six leaders.
Arkansas' Maria Fassi stood atop the individual leaderboard with a 7-under 65, while Vanderbilt's Abbey Carlson stood one stroke back. Arizona State's Linnea Strom, Arkansas' Alana Uriell and Auburn's Elena Hualde were tied for third at 67.
SECOND ROUND on SATURDAY
The Cougars open the Second Round at 8:30 a.m., Saturday. Houston will compete in groups with student-athletes from South Carolina and Virginia.
Kajiki starts the day at 8:30 a.m., Saturday with Tibiletti (8:40 a.m.), Reijers (8:50 a.m.), Harm (9 a.m.) and Thothong (9:10 a.m.) following.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament wraps up with an 8 a.m., split-tee start Sunday.
