The scrimmage did not feature kickoffs or punts with the offense and defense starting drives at different points across the field to simulate game scenarios.
Using a modified scoring system, the defense claimed Thursday's win with a final score of 25-23.The defensive side of the ball closed well including an interception returned for a touchdown by Garrett Davis and a strong showing in a two-minute drill scenario.
Individually on defense, Khalil Williams led the team with five tackles including one for a loss while Davis had four stops as did Collin Wilder and Javian Smith. Ed Oliver was a force in the backfield with three tackles for loss and one touch sack as the Houston quarterbacks are in black no-contact jerseys during spring drills.
On offense, four different backs had at least four carries and all averaged over six yards per carry. Patrick Carr and Mulbah Car paced the way with 26 yards each with Carr, who sat out last season after transferring from Colorado, claiming the day's lone rushing score, a one-yard dive.
John Leday and Derek McLemore each pulled in eight receptions, accounting for 100 and 60 yards, respectively. Keith Corbin (21 yards), Terry Mark (60 yards) and Kinte Hatton (19 yards) each pulled in touchdowns through the air.
Kyle Allen and Mason McClendon split reps at quarterback Thursday with others at the position not yet cleared for full scrimmage work. Allen finished the day 14-of-21 for 126 yards and one touchdown against one interception while McClendon threw for 225 yards and two touchdowns on 15-of-29 passing.
Houston returns to practice Monday morning with its 12th workout of the spring session, its first of four workouts next week culminating in the 2017 Red-White Game at TDECU Stadium. Scheduled to kickoff at 2 p.m., admission to the event is free with a Houston Athletics Equipment surplus sale, Easter egg hunt and more planned for the day.
