Cougars Beat Memphis in Series Finale

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The University of Houston Softball team downed Memphis, 8-2, to clinch the American Athletic Conference series, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Tigers Softball Complex.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 25-22 overall and 10-5 in The American, while the Tigers fall to 26-25 overall and 5-10 in league action.
Sophomore Savannah Heebner improved to 12-9 in the circle behind a complete-game effort. The native of Sedalia, Colo., surrendered two runs while issuing just four hits with one walk and a pair strikeouts.
Cougars Sarah Barker (2-2), Kaylin Crumpton (2-3) and Shelby Miller (2-4) each turned in multi-hit afternoons. Crumpton and Miller also each recorded a extra-base hit with a double and triple, respectively.
KEY INNINGS
1st | The Cougars strung together three consecutive two-out hits to plate two runs in the opening frame. Miller and Heebner each singled, before Crumpton plated the pair on a double to center field.
3rd | Houston tacked on another run in the top of the third. Heebner drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Crumpton. After junior De'Zha Scott entered as a pinch runner, freshman Sarah Queen plated her on single to center field to take a 3-0 lead. In the bottom frame, Memphis plated one run to get on the board at 3-1.
4th | The Cougars responded with three more runs in the top of the fourth. After Barker legged out an infield single to open the frame, James singled to left field and advanced to second base on the throw in to put runners at the corners. Miller followed with a triple down the right field line to plate the pair, before a throwing error allowed her to come home for a 6-1 lead.
7th | Houston added two more runs in the top of the seventh. With one out, Crumpton singled to left center and an error on a fielder's choice off pinch hitter Elise LeBeouf put runners at the corners. After a groundout advanced LeBeouf into scoring position, junior Mariah Garcia plated Crumpton and LeBeouf to go up 8-1. In the bottom frame, the Tigers scored one run of the 8-2 final.
