Cougars Split Doubleheader at UTA

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The University of Houston Softball team fell 4-3 but rebounded with an 18-5, six-inning run rule to split a doubleheader at UT Arlington on Tuesday afternoon at Allan Saxe Field.
With the split, the Cougars improve to 26-23 overall, while the Mavericks move to 27-23 on the season.
Sophomore Presley Bell took the loss in game one to fall to 2-6 in the circle. Bell surrendered two runs (one earned) on three hits in three innings of relief of freshman Trystan Melancon. In game two, sophomore Savannah Heebner improved to 13-9 in the circle behind five innings of two-run softball before freshman Hannah Wolfe pitched the sixth and final frame.
Sophomore Brooke Vannoy led the team with a 3-for-4 afternoon with a double, RBI, two runs scored and two walks. Vannoy was one of three Cougars to record an extra-base hit joined by junior Kaylin Crumpton (double), freshman Sarah Queen (double) and redshirt sophomore Sarah Barker (triple).
ON DECK
The Cougars will close the regular season with a three-game American Athletic Conference series against USF across May 5-7. The series will serve as "Senior Weekend" in recognition of Houston's three seniors â€" Jaylin Baldridge, Savannah Martin and Shelby Miller.

KEY INNINGS
2nd | A pair of illegal pitches plated two runs for the Cougars in the top of the second inning. Heebner walked to lead things off before advancing to third base on a double off the bat of Crumpton. With two runners in scoring position, two miscues in the circle allowed both to come home.
4th | Heads-up base running allowed Houston to add another in the top of the fourth inning. With two outs and runners at the corners, freshman Kelli Montgomery stole second base. On the throw to second base, Queen scored to put Houston up 3-0. However in the bottom frame, back-to-back solo home runs sparked a four-run inning for UTA to take a 4-3 lead.

KEY INNINGS
1st | With one out in the opening frame, singles from sophomore Maya Thomas, freshman Arielle James and senior Shelby Miller loaded the bases. One batter later, Heebner got Houston on the board with a single through the right side of the infield before a fielding error by the right fielder allowed another run to score. Barker then delivered Miller and Heebner on a triple to center field to take a 4-0 lead. In the bottom frame, the Mavericks plated two runs to cut it to 4-2.
3rd | Houston added three more runs in the top of the third. Miller and Heebner each singled to lead things off. An error on a sacrifice bunt from Barker allowed Miller to score. After a groundout, senior Jaylin Baldridge singled to center field to plate junior De'Zha Scott, who pinch ran for Heebner, before Barker scored on a sacrifice bunt fielder's choice to take a 7-2 lead.
5th | The Cougars tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth. Baldridge singled to lead things off before advancing into scoring position on a double off the left field wall from Vannoy. Baldridge then scored on a wild pitch in the next at bat. Thomas followed two batters later on a bunt single from Thomas.
6th | Houston's offense exploded for nine runs on five hits in the top of the sixth en route to the run rule.
