Cougars Split Doubleheader at Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The University of Houston Softball team split a doubleheader at Memphis, falling 6-5 before claiming a 7-3 victory on Friday evening at Tigers Softball Complex.
With the decisions, the Cougars improve to 24-22 overall and 9-5 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Tigers move to 26-24 overall and 5-9 in conference action.
Sophomore Savannah Heebner took the loss in game one to fall to 11-9 in the circle. Heebner surrendered six runs on nine hits with three walks and two strikeouts across five and two-thirds innings pitcher before sophomore Presley Bell logged the final out of the sixth inning.
In game two, freshman Trystan Melancon improved to 11-7 behind a complete-game effort. Melancon scattered eight hits and three runs while striking out three and walking one.
Redshirt sophomore Sarah Barker and senior Shelby Miller each posted multi-hit performances. Barker finished 4-for-6 with a double and two RBI. Miller finished 5-for-8 with a double, home run, 5 RBI and three runs scored.

The Cougars will go for the series win at Memphis in a 2 p.m. first pitch Saturday.

KEY INNINGS
1st | Houston struck first for three runs in the opening frame. After freshman Arielle James and sophomore Maya Thomas each singled to lead things off, Miller plated James on a single up the middle before a throwing error from center field allowed Thomas to score. Heebner followed with a walk to put runners at the corners. One batter later, sophomore Brooke Vannoy delivered Miller on a sacrifice fly.
2nd | The Cougars tacked on two more runs in the top of the second. After a throwing error put junior Mariah Garcia on second base to lead things off, Barker singled to left field to put runners at the corners. In the next at bat, Thomas plated Garcia on a single down the left field line, before Miller plated Barker on a single to right field one batter later to go up 5-0.
5th | Memphis scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull within one run at 5-4.
6th | The Tigers added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-5 lead.

KEY INNINGS
2nd | Memphis scored one run on a pair of doubles to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
3rd | The Cougars answered with one run in the top of the third to tie the game at 1-1. Freshman Sarah Queen singled to left field to open the frame and later advanced to second base on a wild pitch. After Barker laid down a bunt single to put runners at the corners, James plated Queen on a sacrifice fly.
5th | Two home runs in the top of the fifth put Houston up 4-1. Junior Mariah Garcia hit a leadoff home run off the scoreboard in right field. Two batters later, James singled to left field before coming home on Miller's two-run blast to left center.
7th | The Cougars tacked on three more runs on doubles from Barker, James and Miller, and a single from Heebner in the top of the seventh. In the bottom frame, Memphis plated two runs before the final out being made at the plate for the 7-3 final.
