Houston Suffers Heartbreaker at Rice

HOUSTON -- Rice scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to rally and hand Houston Baseball a heartbreaking 4-3 loss on the road at Reckling Park Tuesday evening.
With the loss, the Cougars fell to 23-9 on the year and 0-2 in the Silver Glove Series vs. the Owls, while Rice moved to 12-23 overall and 2-0 in the series.
ON DECK
The Cougars will travel to Memphis to take on the Tigers in a three-game series, beginning Thursday, April 13 at 6:30 p.m. The series will continue Friday at 6:30 p.m. and wrap at 12 p.m. Saturday.

Freshman Brayson Hurdsman made his first career start for the Cougars and struck out a career-high seven in a career-long 5.0 innings of work. The southpaw allowed just two runs on four hits with no walks, but left with the game tied, 2-2.
From the second through the fifth, Hurdsman retired 10 straight hitters. After a leadoff hit-by-pitch in the sixth, he handed the ball over to junior Joey Pulido, who was strong through 3.0 innings before allowing two, two-out hits for two runs. Pulido would suffer the loss, falling to 1-2, after surrendering two runs on five hits with one walk in 3.2 innings.
KEY INNINGS
1st | Rice jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the first on three hits.
5th | Houston would tie the game with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth after Triolo led off the frame with a single up the middle and would come around to score on an RBI-double into right center by Lockhart. With one out, Lockhart moved to third on a groundout by Hollis and scored on a clutch, two-out RBI-single by Wong.
7th | The Cougars grabbed a 3-2 lead with a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Padgett, scoring Hollis -- who walked, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch.
9th | Rice used back-to-back, two-out hits in the bottom of the ninth to score two runs to win in walkoff fashion over the Cougars.
RICE NOTES
Rice improved to 12-23 overall and 2-0 vs. Houston to claim the Silver Glove Series for the first time since 2013. The Owls used a two-run rally in the bottom of the ninth to claim the 4-3 victory over Houston after winning 9-0 vs. the Cougars on April 4.
Rice closer Glenn Otto picked up the win, improving to 3-2 after throwing just one pitch, but being the pitcher of record when the Owls took the lead. Rice out hit Houston, 9-7, led by Dominic DiCaprio and Ryan Chandler, each with two hits and an RBI.
