Houston Earns Win Over No. 7 CSF

HOUSTON -- Houston Baseball starter Seth Romero struck out 10 and was backed by early run support as the No. 20 Cougars earned a 7-4 win over No. 7 Cal State Fullerton on Friday to open the weekend series at Schroeder Park.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 7-2 on the year and Cal State Fullerton fell to 4-4 with the loss.

Houston and Cal State Fullerton will continue its three-game series with Game 2 slated for Noon on Saturday and 1 pm on Sunday. Note: Saturday's game was originally-scheduled for 6:30 p.m., but has been moved up due to projected inclement weather.

HOUSTON NOTES
- Freshman Jared Triolo belted his second career home run -- a solo shot in the fourth.
- Seth Romero tallied his third-straight 10+ strikeout game in as many starts, registering 10 vs. the Titans.
- Connor Wong walked and has now reached base in all nine games this season.
- The last time Houston earned a win over a Top-10 program was back on March 28, 2015 at No. 6 UCF in a 7-5 victory.
- Houston has now won four straight games and is now 5-1 at home.

Starter Seth Romero notched his third straight 10+ strikeout performance in just three starts, tallying 10 strikeouts in 8.0 innings, allowing just three runs on one walk and seven hits to move to 2-1 with the win.
With his sixth career 10+ strikeout game, Romero takes over sole possession of sixth all-time in the Houston record books and fourth all-time with 239 career strikeouts.
Junior reliever Joey Pulido tossed 1.0 inning out of the bullpen, allowing on unearned run on one hit.
KEY INNINGS
1st | Houston jumped out on Cal State Fullerton with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first after Wong walked and Padgett singled to put two on early. Davis followed up, scoring Wong on an RBI-single and with one out, Lockhart plated Padgett from third on a sacrifice fly for the 2-0 advantage.
2nd | The Cougars extended their lead with two more runs in the second as Bielamowicz and Etzel reached on back-to-back singles and later scored on RBI-groundouts by Hollis and Wong to make it 4-0 Houston.
4th | Cal State Fullerton scored its first run of the game in the top of the fourth on an RBI-double, but Houston quickly responded with a run in the latter half -- thanks to a Triolo home run -- his second of his career for the 5-1 lead.
5th | The Titans added two runs in the fifth following a three-hit inning to trim Houston's deficit to 5-3.
7th | Houston took advantage of several Cal State Fullerton miscues to plate two more runs and extend its lead to 7-3 in the seventh.
9th | Houston made a few defensive miscues to allow Cal State Fullerton a late run, but Pulido was able to reduce the damage, stranding a pair late.
CAL STATE FULLERTON NOTES
Cal State Fullerton fell to 4-4 on the year with the loss and starter Connor Seabold dropped to 1-2 after allowing five earned runs on six hits and one walk to the Cougars. The Titans out hit Houston, 8-7, led by Chris Hudgins' two hits.
