HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Softball team picked up its fourth and fifth straight shutout, sweeping Texas Southern, 1-0 and 6-0, in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Cougar Softball Stadium.
With the wins, the Cougars improve to 14-11 overall and extend their win streak to eight straight games, while the Tigers fall to 7-5. Houston's string of five straight shutouts ties the program record set back in 2011.
Pitchers Trystan Melancon (6-5) and Savannah Heebner (6-3) each picked up their sixth wins of the season. Melancon scattered two hits and struck out seven in a complete-game shutout. Starting with the last out of the first inning, the native of Tomball, Texas, retired 12 straight until a single broke up the no-hit bid two outs into the fifth inning. Heebner carried a no-hit bid one out into the sixth inning, walking two and striking out five, before Presley Bell sealed the sweep with a scoreless inning of relief.
Junior Kaylin Crumpton led the way for the Cougars at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. The native of Corona, Calif., plated the lone run in the first game of the doubleheader on a hit by pitch with the bases loaded.
Crumpton was one of three Houston players to go deep in game two. Junior Mariah Garcia and freshman Arielle James went back-to-back in the bottom of the sixth inning to mark Houston's sixth multi-homer game of the season. Garcia's and James' homers also marked the first time the Cougars went back-to-back since Julana Shrum and Courtney Mica did so at Houston Baptist on March 3, 2015.
Sophomore Maya Thomas led all players with three hits, including two bunt singles, and three stolen bases.
