HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Softball team picked up its fifth and sixth consecutive wins, sweeping Prairie View A&M, 3-0 and 7-0, in a doubleheader on Friday night at Cougar Softball Stadium.
With the wins, the Cougars improve to 12-11 overall and pick up their second and third straight decisions via shutout, while the Panthers fall to 3-16. Houston's six straight wins are the longest for the program since 2014 (11 straight), while the string of shutouts is the first since 2012 (three straight).
Senior Shelby Miller paced the Cougars with a pair of multi-hit games, going 4-for-6 with a triple, three RBI and two runs scored.
Sophomore Brooke Vannoy finished 2-for-6 on the day with a hit in each game, but made the most of it in the nightcap, launching a grand slam over the left field fence in the third inning.
Pitchers Savannah Heebner (5-3) and Trystan Melancon (5-5) each picked up their fifth wins of the season. Heebner scattered six hits and recorded a career-high eight strikeouts in going the distance in the first game, while Melancon and sophomore Presley Bell combined to one-hit PVAMU in game two. Bell earned her first career save with three hitless innings of relief.
