BURRELL AND BURKE MOVE ON
Burrell entered the championships tied for the third fastest 60-meter dash time this season at 6.59, which he ran at the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships. Running in heat one, Burrell bettered his season-best by crossing the line in 6.53 to finish second in the heat and qualify No. 2 overall for Saturday's final.
Burke was in action in the second heat of the 60 on Friday, bringing the same season best of 6.59 into the competition, after edging out Burrell for gold in the American Championships. Burke finished his heat in third with a time of 6.61, placing him sixth overall and qualifying him for Saturday's final on time.
With each Burrell and Burke qualifying for the finals of the 60, Houston assured itself of having two First Team All-Americans in the same event since 1996. The last pair of Cougars to accomplish the feat were Darius Pemberton and Sheddric Fields who finished fourth and eighth respectively in the long jump.
Burrell and Burke will be in action in the finals of the 60 on Saturday, with the race scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
LATTIN'S TOP-10 FINISH
Sophomore Amere Lattin booked his first ticket to the NCAA Indoor Championships, when he finished the season ranked tied for 10th in the 60-meter hurdles with a personal best 7.74. Running in the first heat on Friday, Lattin clocked a 7.85 to finish sixth in his heat and 10th overall. Lattin took home Second Team All-American Honors for the finish, marking the third consecutive season that the Cougars have had a hurdler take the honor (Issac Williams, 10th in 2015; Marcus McWilliams, 4th in 2016).
BARRAZA'S SPECIALTY
Senior Brian Barraza will be the final Cougar in action over the weekend when he competes in the 3,000-meter run on Saturday. Barraza broke his own school record in the 3K when he ran 7:53.60 at the Husky Classic. Barraza became the first Cougar in program history to qualify for the indoor championship in an event longer than the 400-meter dash. He enters competition at nationals with the 14th best time in the NCAA this season and will run at 6:15 p.m., on Saturday.
