Red Holds on to Win World Series, 7-6

HOUSTON -- Houston Softball's Team White rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough as Team Red held on for a 7-6 win to complete the Red-White World Series sweep on Saturday afternoon at Cougar Softball Stadium.
KEY INNINGS
1st | With two outs, junior Kaylin Crumpton gave Red a early 1-0 lead with a solo home run to left center in the opening frame.
4th | Red extended its lead to 5-0 with a four-run fourth inning. Junior Sarah Barker led off the inning with a double and sophomore Elise LeBeouf walked two batters later. Freshman Trystan Melancon plated Barker on a single up the middle to make it 2-0. Sophomore Breelyn Thames then tacked on two more runs with a double into the left-center gap, later scoring on a groundout to second base.
Junior De'Zha Scott got one run back for White in the bottom frame, advancing home on the throw when sophomore Brooke Vannoy stole second base after being walked.
5th | Sophomore Presley Bell perfectly laid down a bunt single to break up Melancon's no-hit bid with one out in the fifth inning.
6th | Freshman Breezy Burton hit a two-run monster shot over the batter's eye to pull White within two runs at 5-3 in the sixth inning. Vannoy singled to open the frame.
7th | Crumpton provided Red with two insurance runs in the top of the seventh. With two outs, the native of Corona, Calif., singled through the left side of the infield to deliver teammates Kelli Montgomery and Jaylin Baldridge who reached on a hit by pitch and infield error.
White rallied with three runs in its last at bat. After a leadoff single from Scott, senior Shelby Miller drove her in with a double. In the next at bat, sophomore Rachel Hill brought the team within one run of Red on a two-run blast to left center. However, sophomore Savannah Heebner retired the next three batters to seal the series.

Houston opens the 2017 season with its first 11 games at Cougars Softball Stadium, highlighted with the Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational (Feb. 10-12) and Rawlings Classic (Feb. 17-19). In between the two tournaments, the Cougars will play host to Houston Baptist on Feb. 15.
