HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Men's Basketball program looks to return to its winning ways when it takes on American Athletic Conference rival UConn at 8 p.m., Wednesday, inside Hofheinz Pavilion. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Houston (18-8 • 9-5 American) looks to sweep the regular-season series against the Huskies after taking a 62-46 win on Dec. 28, 2016, inside XL Center in Hartford, Conn. In that game, the Cougars held UConn to a school-record-low 12 points in the first half in the conference opener for both teams.
Both teams are tied for third in the latest American standings with only three regular-season games remaining after Wednesday.
Wednesday's game also will be the next-to-last in historic Hofheinz Pavilion. Following Wednesday's game, the Cougars play host to East Carolina on March 5. From there, the facility will undergo a $60 million renovation and become the Fertitta Center for the 2018-19 season.
This season, junior guard Rob Gray continues to lead the Cougars and the league with 20.6 points per game. Houston Basketball has not enjoyed a conference scoring champion since guard Aubrey Coleman led UH, Conference USA and the nation with 25.6 points per game.
Gray, who led all players with 23 points in the Cougars' loss to No. 19 SMU on Saturday, was named to the American Athletic Conference Honor Roll for the team-leading fifth time this season earlier this week.
Senior guard and Yates High School product Damyean Dotson ranks second on the team and fourth in the league with 17.1 points per game and stands in a tie for 12th with 7.0 rebounds per game. He is one of only three players to rank among the league's top-14 leaders in both scoring and rebounding.
Houston remains the only school with two of the American Athletic Conference's top-4 scoring leaders.
