HOUSTON -- University of Houston freshman Trystan Melancon made her first career win a memorable one, firing a no-hitter in a 12-0, five-inning run-rule of Rhode Island on Friday night at Cougar Softball Stadium as part of the Houston Classic.
In a day that was marred with a four-plus hour weather delay and saw the Cougars (4-4) not take the field until 11:18 p.m., Melancon logged the 16th no-hitter in program history and first since Bailey Watts blanked Louisiana-Monroe on Feb. 18, 2012. The native of Tomball, Texas, retired her final 14 batters faced and recorded a career-high eight strikeouts.
Eight different Cougars recorded one hit against the Rams (0-2). Freshman Arielle James and sophomore Elise LeBeouf each recorded doubles, while senior Shelby Miller and sophomore Savannah Heebner accounted for two RBI apiece for Houston.
The Cougars will continue their host tournament with two games against No. 4/6 Oklahoma on Saturday at 4:30 and 7 p.m. Houston's 4:30 p.m. tilt with the Sooners represents the program's 11th Annual Striking Out Breast Cancer game. A silent auction will start at 2 p.m. and conclude at 7 p.m. From there, the highest bidders can claim their items. All proceeds will go to Susan G Komen.
