Cougars Down Houston Baptist, 3-1

HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Softball team defeated Houston Baptist, 3-1, on Wednesday night at Cougar Softball Stadium.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 3-4 overall, while HBU fell to 2-3.
Sophomore Brooke Vannoy carried the load offensively for Houston, accounting for all three RBI. The native of Sugar Land, Texas, collected her first home run of the 2017 season with a two-run shot to left center in the bottom of the third inning and added an RBI single in the sixth as part of a 2-for-3 performance.
Sophomore Presley Bell improved to 2-1, scattering nine hits and one run in tossing her second complete game of the season.
KEY INNINGS
3rd | After two scoreless innings from both teams, Vannoy's long ball put Houston up 2-0. Freshman Sarah Queen led off the bottom of the third with a single to center field before trotting around in the next at bat.
6th | Vannoy helped the Cougars tack on another run with a one-out, RBI single in the bottom of the sixth. Juniors Kaylin Crumpton and De'Zha Scott walked and singled to open the frame.
7th | The Huskies rallied for one run on three hits in their last at bat en route to the 3-1 final.

The Cougars will conclude their 12-game homestand with five games as part of the Rawlings Classic across Feb. 17-19. Houston will play host to No. 4/6 Oklahoma, rv/rv Ole Miss, Incarnate Word and Rhode Island. The Cougars' 4:30 p.m. tilt with Oklahoma on Saturday, Feb. 18, represents the program's 11th Annual Striking Out Breast Cancer game. A silent auction will be held during the game with all proceeds going to Susan G. Komen.
