Houston Splits Games to Close Host Tournament

HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Softball team fell 8-5 to Wright State and rebounded with a 7-3 victory over Boston College to close out the Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational on Sunday at Cougar Softball Stadium.
Freshman Arielle James led the Cougars (2-3) offensively with a 4-for-7 showing and one double across two games. Teammates Shelby Miller and Sarah Barker each trotted around the base paths on home runs. For Miller, the homer was her fourth of the tournament, while Barker belted the first of her career.
Sophomore Savannah Heebner (1-1) picked up her first win of the season in a complete-game effort against BC (3-1). Sophomore Presley Bell (1-1) suffered the loss against WSU (2-3), surrendering two runs in a third of an inning.

KEY INNINGS
1st | After a three-hit opening frame gave BC a 2-0 lead, Miller responded with a two-out, two-run home run down the left field line to tie the game.
2nd | Houston added another two runs on four hits in the bottom of the second. Heebner led off the inning with a single to center field. With two outs, Barker and freshman Arielle James each collected RBI doubles to left field to put the Cougars up 4-2.
4th | Houston added three runs in the bottom of the fourth. After singles from Cougars Brooke Vannoy, Sarah Queen and Arielle James loaded the bases, Maya Thomas laid down a bunt single to push across Vannoy and Elise LeBeouf followed with a two-RBI single down the left field line to bolster Houston's lead to 7-2.
7th | The Eagles scored one last run on a leadoff home run in the top of the seventh to arrive at the 7-3 final.

KEY INNINGS
1st | WSU took advantage of two hits and two errors to plate four runs in the opening frame.
2nd | Houston scored two runs in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit in half. Queen got the Cougars on the board with a sacrifice fly, followed by sophomore Breelyn Thames, who singled home another run.
6th | An RBI groundout from LeBeouf pulled Houston within one run at 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth.
7th | The Raiders tacked on another four runs in the top of the seventh to bookend their scoring and go up 8-3. Barker sparked a two-out rally with a two-run shot to right center, but to no avail as WSU got a line out in the next at bat to close the game, 8-5
