Houston Drops Two at Host Tournament

HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Softball team fell 5-2 to Wichita State and 12-4 to Boston College on Saturday at Cougar Softball Stadium as part of the Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational.
Sophomore Maya Thomas led the Cougars (1-3) at the plate turning in a 5-for-6 showing with two runs scored on the day. Senior Shelby Miller and freshman Sarah Queen each hit home runs, respectfully. The homer for Miller was her third in two days, while Queen's knock was the first of her early career.
Sophomore Savannah Heebner (0-1) and freshman Trystan Melancon (0-1) each suffered their first losses of 2017.

KEY INNINGS
1st | A two-out solo home run to left field gave WSU an early 1-0 lead.
2nd | The Shockers tacked on another run with an RBI single in the top of the second.
4th | Another RBI single in the fourth gave WSU a 3-0 advantage. However, the Cougars rallied in the bottom frame. After a dropped fly allowed Houston to get on the board, Heebner plated another run with an RBI single through the right side of the infield to make it 3-2.
5th | The Shockers tacked on two more insurance runs on a single down the left field line en route to the 5-2 final to close out their participation in the tournament.
