HOUSTON â€" The Houston Cougar Women's Tennis team continued 2017 spring play with a 5-2 victory over Abilene Christian on Saturday at the brand new Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility. The Cougars officially dedicated the facility prior to the match.
Houston honored Barbara Wallace Winston and her tremendous donation before the contest on Saturday. Members of the family were on the court as the team showed their support and presented her with multiple gifts.
The Cougars also honored members of Patriot Court Systems, Advantage Fencing, Aer-Flo and Spectrum for their work in the completion of the facility.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Houston started strong with a sweep of the doubles point against the Wildcats. Freshman Lauren Alter and junior Ana Glumac teamed up for the first time to defeat Ansley Boarman and Autumn Crossnoe 6-3, giving the Cougars the early lead.
Houston secured the first point of the match on court one when junior Tsveta Dimitrova and freshman Cristina Rovira partnered to defeat Whitney Williams and Erin Walker 6-2. The victory was the first of the season for the duo and gave Houston a 1-0 overall lead in the match.
Sveva Mazzari and Constandena Nicolaou led Jordan Henry and Sarah Adams 5-3 when doubles play ended.
Dimitrova kept the momentum going into singles play where she handled Walker 6-0, 6-4 to extend the lead to 2-0. The victory for Dimitrova is her first this season after each of her matches on opening weekend went unfinished.
Glumac picked up Houston's third point of the match while competing on court six. After winning the first set 6-2, Glumac took the second set 6-3 to sweep Boarman. Glumac improved to 1-1 in singles play on the young season.
Houston secured the victory with a 3-set victory for Mazzari on court two. After dropping the first set 6-0, Mazzari battled back to take set two 6-2, before a 6-3 victory in the third set clinched the match for the Cougars. Mazzari is now 2-1 during the 2017 season.
With the match already in hand, the Cougars picked up their fifth point from Alter on court four. Alter also dropped set one but battled back to win 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 to improve to 1-1 this season.
