HOUSTON - Junior Vanessa Almaguer and sophomore Desiree Bowen scored to lead Houston Soccer to a 2-0 victory over UTSA on Sunday night at Carl Lewis Complex. With the win, the Cougars improved to 4-1-1 and grabbed their fourth shutout of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a balanced first half, Almaguer put the Cougars' first goal on the board in the 51st minute of play. Connecting with junior Margo McEntire, the Dallas, Texas, native struck the ball to the right corner off a rebound of UTSA's goalkeeper Hannah Weisse's hands for her first goal of the season.
Thirty nine seconds after Almaguer's goal, Bowen got Houston on the board again. The Suwannee, Ga., native, kicked in a chip shot from the top of the penalty box to extend the Cougars lead. Bowen's goal is her second of the season.
FOURTH SHUTOUT
Sophomore transfer Rachel Estopare got her sixth start of the season between the posts. The Bend, Ore., native had two saves in the first 12th minutes of play. During the 12th minute of play freshman Nicole Young replaced an injured Estopare in the net. In her first collegiate appearance, the Pearland, Texas, native set an individual season high nine saves in her 79th minutes of play. The freshman captured her first win and shutout of her collegiate career. The Houston goalkeepers end the match with 11 saves to set a new single game high this season.
With the win, Houston now leads series against USTA 4-3-0 with 10 goals for and seven goals against.
