HOUSTON - The Houston Cougar Soccer team dropped its first game of the season in a hard-fought 3-0 decision to UC Riverside in the first of two weekend matches at Carl Lewis Field, on Friday.
Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Estopare had a season high six saves while Houston had shots on goal from juniors Kristina Schulz (2) and Selena Peters as well as from sophomores Desiree Bowen (2) and Hayley Hubbard and freshman Kaitlyn Wild.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the balanced first half, Arizona transfer Estopare had five of her six saves on 10 shots by the Highlanders. The Cougar defense was able to control the first 45 minutes of scoreless action. On the offensive side, Peters had a good look at the goal in the 26th minute but Highlander's goalkeeper Alanna Guzman was able to make the save.
In the second half, UC Riverside was able to find the scoreboard in the 53rd minute on a goal by Kyra Taylor. Taylor netted her first goal of the season off a low corner kick to put the Highlanders on the board.
Just a minute later, the Highlanders found the scoreboard again off on another corner kick, giving Sammy Arellano her second assist of the game. Tayler Dragoo headed the ball past Estopare to score the Highlander's second goal.
The Highlanders were able to add another score in the 66th minute when Hannah Wyatt played a cross into the box that Amanda Apelian tapped in the corner of the post.
The Cougars now sit at 3-1-1 on the season and 1-1 at home.
