Lattin Reaches 4x100m Relay Finals for USA

Bydgoszcz, Poland -- Just one day after claiming silver in the 110-meter hurdles, freshman Amere Lattin helped Team USA qualify for the finals of the 4x100-meter relay, while Brian Bell advanced to the semifinals of the 800-meters at the IAAF World U20 Championships, on Friday.
Lattin was part of a 1-2 finish for the United States, on Thursday in the 110 hurdles, when he ran 13.39 to claim the silver medal. After entering a pool to run the relay, Lattin was selected to lead the team out of the blocks as the first leg. Team USA finished 39.70 to qualify fourth overall behind Japan, Australia and Germany. The finals of the 4x100 relay will be held at 12:35 p.m., Saturday.
Bell got his first taste of the IAAF U20 World Championships competing in the 800 on Friday. He entered with the No. 11 time among competitors in the event with his school record time of 1:47.17. Competing in Heat 4, Bell crossed the line in 1:50.97 to finish second in the heat and earn an automatic qualifying bid into the semifinal. Bell's time was the 23rd fastest overall, and he will run for a shot at the finals at 10:50 a.m., Saturday.
Long jumping sensation Samiyah Samuels was on the runway for Team USA in the finals of the women's long jump. Samuels qualified for the finals when her first jump of the opening round went 19-11.5 (6.08m) which stood as the 11th best mark in the first round. Samuels matched that mark in the finals on Saturday, to finish eighth overall.
Future Cougar sprinter Cecilia Tamayo was back on the track for Team Mexico on Friday in the first round of the women's 200-meter dash. Tamayo finished the event 29th with a time of 24.39. Earlier in the week Tamayo competed in the 100-meter dash where she placed 27th in 11.85.
In total, 1,512 athletes will represent 157 different countries at the IAAF World U20 Championships with each athlete qualifying by meeting a minimum mark in their respective events and being one of the top-2 under-20 athletes in their country.

NATIONALLY RANKED SIGNING CLASS
The Cougars made noise throughout the entire offseason when the men's signing class was ranked as the No. 2 class in the nation by Flotrack last July. The current freshmen on campus are led by three incoming student-athletes on the MileSplit All-American team. Marcus McWilliams (110m hurdles), Gerald Mills (200m) and John Lewis III (100m) all earned All-America honors, while distance runner Jahnavi Schneider was named as the No. 3 cross country recruit in the state of Texas by TxRunning.com.
