TULSA, Okla. â€" An exciting, extra-inning, walk-off win led Houston, 5-4, over Memphis during day one of the American Athletic Conference Championship. The Cougars advance to the semifinals to face No. 1 seed USF tomorrow.
Houston improved to 27-28 on the season with the win, marking the fourth straight over Memphis.
The Cougars were down 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth when sophomore Kaylin Crumpton hit a RBI base hit into right field, scoring Baldridge from third to tie the game.
Memphis responded the following half inning with two runs to take a 3-1 lead and added one more in the top of the seventh to extend their lead, 4-1.
Houston never backed down. With two outs, Crumpton came in clutch again and hit a single up the middle to start the rally. Freshman Elise LeBeouf drove her in with her second triple of the season to the right field corner to tally her 35th RBI of the season.
Senior Courtney Klingler stepped up to the plate with the team on her shoulders. She took a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall for her 14th home run of the season to tie the game, 4-4.
The two headed into extra inning and held each other scoreless with runners on until the bottom of the 10th.
Klingler drew the lead-off walk before Presley Bell entered to pinch run at first. Freshman Rachel Hill hit a double to the right center gap to move runners to second and third with no outs. Maya Thomas slapped a sacrifice fly out to left field, plating Bell and sealing the walk-off win for the Cougars.
Freshman RHP Savannah Heebner (9-7) pitched her seventh complete game of the season. In the 10.0 innings, she allowed three earned runs on seven hits while striking out three.
