Softball Drops Two at No. 17 Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. â€" Errors plagued Houston Softball as the Cougars dropped both games of the Saturday doubleheader to No. 17/18 Arizona.
The Cougars fell to 18-21 on the season while the Wildcats improved to 28-12 with the wins.
Senior Katie St. Pierre extended her reached base streak to 40 games with a lead-off base hit into left field to open the first game and a walk during her second plate appearance in game two.
Houston Softball returns home for the 10th Annual Striking Out Breast Cancer game on Tuesday as the Cougars host Baylor for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. First 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a free pink t-shirt. Houston Softball will also have many items to bid in the silent auction. All proceeds will benefit Susan G. Komen Houston.
ARIZONA 11, HOUSTON 2 â€" 5 inn.
Arizona jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first off three hits, two walks and a fielding error before adding two more the following inning on three more hits and a Cougar error.
After two scoreless innings, freshman Brooke Vannoy belted her sixth home run of the season to cut the Wildcats lead down to 6-2.
Two solo home runs and three Cougar errors sealed the run-rule victory for the Wildcats as they posted five more runs to win 11-2.
ARIZONA 7, HOUSTON 4
The Cougars held Arizona scoreless for the first two innings before the Wildcats took the lead, 6-0.
Houston responded after three scoreless frames and posted a four-run inning to get on the board. Freshman Elise LeBeouf led off with a walk before stealing second the following pitch. She advanced to third when senior Courtney Klingler hit a double off the centerfield wall. LeBeouf scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Shelby Miller.
With two outs and a runner on third, back-to-back errors by Arizona third baseman Katiyana Mauga brought in a run and continued the Cougars rally. Thames and Bell both scored to give Houston four runs.
But it was all Arizona from there as the Wildcats added another run in the bottom of the fifth and held Houston scoreless for the rest of the game.
