HOUSTON â€" Two home runs including a grand slam by senior Courtney Klingler led Houston Softball to an 8-4 win over No. 19/20 Baylor during game two of the 10th Annual Striking Out Breast Cancer doubleheader.
The Cougars (19-22) dropped game one to the Bears (32-11), 4-0.
The win during game two marked the first victory over a No. 19 team since the Cougars defeated No. 19 Texas A&M at Cougar Softball Stadium, 4-3, on April 20, 2011.
Senior Katie St. Pierre's reached base streak ended at 40 games.
BAYLOR 4, HOUSTON 0
After three scoreless frames, Baylor gained a 1-0 lead off an RBI single by Shelby Friudenberg. The Bears added another run in the top half of the fifth off four hits and a Cougar error.
Baylor added to its lead with two more runs off three hits.
The Cougars broke up Baylor starting pitcher Kendall Potts' no-hitter with back-to-back hits late in the seventh inning.
Senior LHP Julana Shrum (7-7) took the loss for the Cougars. She pitched her 33rd career complete game, allowed three earned runs, a walk and struck out one.
HOUSTON 8, BAYLOR 5
Houston trailed the Bears 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth when sophomore Kaylin Crumpton knocked a leadoff single through the left side. With one out on the board, senior Courtney Klingler belted her ninth home run of the season to left center to tie the game 2-2.
An inning later after the Cougar defense held the Bears scoreless, Megan Noel opened with a single down the left field line and advanced to second as Brooke Vannoy drew the eight-pitch walk. St. Pierre laid down a perfect bunt to load the bases. Crumpton knocked in a run on a blooper into right field just before Elise LeBeouf slapped a base hit through the right side to plate the Cougars fourth run of the game, forcing the second pitching change for Baylor.
Klingler blasted the first pitch grand slam over the left field fence to mark her 10th home run of the season, 17th of her career, pushing the Cougars lead 8-2.
Baylor responded the following inning with a three-run home run by Sydney Christensen, but the Cougars held the Bears for the rest of the game to claim the win.
Freshman RHP Savannah Heebner (4-6) earned the win for the Cougars. She threw 5.1 innings, allowed five runs, three walks and struck out one. Senior Julana Shrum came in relief to earn her first save of the season and third of her career.
