HOUSTON â€" The University of Houston women's tennis team met up with fellow conference competitor No. 29 Tulsa on Saturday, falling 5-2 to the Golden Hurricane to begin the final weekend of play before the American Conference Championship Tournament.
Despite Tulsa having the advantage in doubles due Houston being down a player, the Cougar's gave themselves a chance to win the doubles point with Mina Markovic and Tina Rupert defeating Rongrong Leenabanchong and Martha Matoula on the second court 6-3. However, Tulsa secured their first point for the day with Ksenia Laskutova and Renata Kuricova overcoming Despoina Vogasari and Rocio Martin 6-4 on the top court.
The Golden Hurricane would take a 2-0 lead into singles play without a Cougar player on court six, and Tulsa locked down the two clinching points for the day on courts three and five with Martin falling to Leenabanchong 6-4, 6-1 and Maria Cardenas falling to Kuricova 6-3, 6-1.
The remaining three courts all split sets and finished out with a third-set tiebreaker to end the day. Rupert won court four 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 over Marcelina Cichon, while Markovic also secured a point for Houston, defeating Laskutova 6-4, 2-6, 10-5 on court two. Tulsa won their fifth and final point for the day on the top court with Vogasari falling to Saana Saarteinen 6-3, 5-7, 5-10.
