Home Runs Lead Cougars Over McNeese State

HOUSTON -- Three solo home runs highlighted Houston Softball's 4-1 win over McNeese State Wednesday evening.
The Cougars improved to 18-18 on the season while the Cowgirls dropped to 26-8.
Freshman Brooke Vannoy led the Cougars with two home runs in back-to-back plate appearances. Senior Katie St. Pierre knocked a double into centerfield in the bottom of the second to extend her reached base streak to 37 straight games dating back to last season.
Houston jumped out to a 1-0 lead when freshman Savannah Heebner hit an RBI single into centerfield with one out and bases loaded.
Vannoy pushed the Cougars lead to 2-0 with her fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Courtney Klingler followed the next inning as she belted her eighth home run of the season and 15th of her career.
After senior Megan Noel grounded into a double play, Vannoy stepped up to the plate and roped her fifth home run of the season to seal the 4-1 win over McNeese State.
Senior LHP Julana Shrum (7-5) earned the win for the Cougars. She threw her sixth complete game of the season, 31st of her career. Shrum allowed six hits, one run, a walk and stuck out a batter.
NEXT AT BAT
Houston Softball travels to Tucson, Ariz., for a three-game series against No. 17/18 Arizona this weekend. The Cougars open the series on Friday at 8 p.m. (CT). Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 8 p.m. (CT) while the series concludes on Sunday at 2 p.m. (CT).
