Softball Drops Heartbreaker at No. 17 Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. â€" After leading 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth, Houston Softball dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to No. 17 Arizona in the series opener Friday evening.
The Cougars (18-19) return to Hillenbrand Stadium tomorrow as they face the Wildcats (26-12) in a doubleheader starting at 5:30 p.m. (CT). Sunday's game has been moved up due to potential rain in the forecast.
After two scoreless frames, Houston Softball jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Freshman Breelyn Thames started the run with a one-out walk before Brooke Vannoy was hit by a pitch, placing runners on first and second. Senior Katie St. Pierre loaded the bases with a single to third, reaching base for the 38th straight game.
With two outs and bases loaded, freshman Elise LeBeouf hit a base hit up the middle to plate two runs.
Arizona cut the Cougars lead down to 2-1 when Mandie Perez stole home.
Two innings later, the Cougar defense had two outs before Arizona's Mo Mercado hit a three-run home run to push the Wildcats ahead 4-2.
The Cougars rallied in the top of the seventh when Kaylin Crumpton knocked in a run on a ground out to the pitcher. But the rally was cut short as the Cougars fell 4-3.
