Softball Claims Series over UConn

STORRS, Conn. â€" A 23-hit performance led Houston Softball to a doubleheader sweep and the series win over UConn Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars (23-27, 6-9 The American) earned a 5-1 win in game one over the Huskies (19-28, 4-9 the American) before taking the series finale 7-4 to clinch the series win.

HOUSTON 5, UCONN 1
Houston jumped on the board in the first inning off two hits and a walk. The rally was sparked by a two-out walk by Elise LeBeouf who was later knocked in by a bunt single by fellow freshman Maya Thomas.
UConn tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth off a walk and a base hit.
The Cougars regained the lead again on a two-out rally during the top of the sixth when LeBeouf singled through the right side just before senior Courtney Klingler belted her 12th home run of the season.
Houston added two more runs to its lead in the following inning on two hits and a UConn error.
The Cougar defense held UConn to just four hits
Freshman RHP Presley Bell (5-8) picked up the win for the Cougars. She pitched her sixth complete game of the season, allowed only one run while striking out four.
HOUSTON 7, UCONN 4
After two scoreless frames, Houston took a 4-0 lead in the top of the third off three hits and two walks. Freshman Rachel Hill drove in a run on her third hit of the day. Two more runs came in on a base hit by Savannah Heebner.
The following inning, the Cougars took a 6-0 lead when four Cougars hit back-to-back singles as Klingler drove in two runs.
UConn responded in the bottom half of the inning and cut into the Cougars lead once again the next inning to make it 6-4.
Houston went on to add another run in the top of the seventh to seal the win and claim the series.
Freshman RHP Savannah Heebner (7-6) earned the win for the Cougars. She pitched 4.2 innings, allowed four earned runs while striking out three. Senior LHP Julana Shrum earned her second save of the season.
NEXT AT BAT
Houston Softball returns to action next week when the Cougars travel to McNeese State for the rescheduled single game on May 3 at 6 p.m. The Cougars wrap American Athletic Conference regular season play next weekend as they host Memphis for a three-game series starting Friday.
