GREENVILLE, N.C. â€" Houston Softball picked up its sixth run rule victory of the season before dropping a heartbreaker in the doubleheader split Saturday vs. East Carolina.
The Cougars (21-25, 4-7) claimed a 9-0 run rule victory in game one before the Pirates (21-28, 3-11) snagged the game two win in walk off fashion, 7-6.
Senior Courtney Klingler had a standout day as she went 4-for-5 with eight RBIs and a grand slam to seal the game one victory.
Sophomore Kaylin Crumpton was hit by a pitch four times between the two games to match her season best of 20 in a single season. She now has 40 HBP in her career to rank second in school history behind Kendra Cullum who racked up 83 in her three years with UH.
The two return to action tomorrow for the series finale at 10 a.m.
HOUSTON 9, EAST CAROLINA 0 â€" 6 inn.
Houston jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first inning when Crumpton and Elise LeBeouf were hit by pitches. Both scored on an RBI double to the left center gap by senior Courtney Klingler.
The Cougars added another run in the top off the third off a sacrifice fly to center by Klingler.
Houston held on to a 4-0 lead heading into the top of the sixth when the Cougars added five runs off four hits including a grand slam by Klingler to seal the 9-0 run rule victory over ECU.
Klingler knocked in seven of the Cougars nine runs with her 2-for-2 performance at the plate.
Freshman Savannah Heebner (6-6) pitched her third complete game shutout of the season. In 6.0 innings pitched, she allowed just four hits and struck out five batters.
EAST CAROLINA 7, HOUSTON 6
Once again, the Cougars opened with a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when St. Pierre beat the throw at home to score. LeBeouf scored two batters later when freshman Brooke Vannoy hit a sacrifice fly to left.
East Carolina knotted it 2-2 off three base hits and two walks in the bottom of the third.
Two innings later, the Cougars regained their lead, 4-2, on back-to-back RBI hits. ECU responded in the bottom half of the inning when a throwing error plated another run to put the pirates within one.
The next inning, ECU hit back-to-back solo home runs for the third lead change of the game.
Houston knew it had to rally in the top of the seventh to keep the game going. The Cougars did just that when Klingler and Miller recorded consecutive hits. Sophomore De'Zha Scott entered to pinch run for Klingler and score the next play on a passed ball. A RBI double by Julana Shrum put the Cougars in the lead, 6-5, once again.
East Carolina scored two more runs off a Cougar error and a RBI base hit to seal the walk-off win.
Junior Shelby Miller (4-4) took the loss for the Cougars. She pitched 4.1 innings in relief, allowed four earned runs and struck out a batter.
