The #HTownTakeover closed out the 2016 spring season Saturday with the 2016 Red & White Game presented by Energy Ogre at TDECU Stadium. Using a modified scoring system, the Houston defense (White) defeated the Houston Offense (Red), 74-72.
The defense had nine tackles for loss, led by linebacker D'Juan Hines with two, and recorded six sacks in a game that saw the Houston quarterbacks wearing no tackle jerseys and being down by touch. J.J. Dallas, who has been with the program since January after transferring from Blinn Community College, led all defenders with 11 tackles.
Defensive end Zach Vaughan had the day's lone interception when he made a diving catch to snag a pass that had been deflected at the line by Zorrell Ezell.
Offensively, Houston enjoyed the majority of its success through the air as Greg Ward Jr. completed 18-of-28 passes for 303 yards and three touchdowns, all to Isaiah Johnson. Johnson totaled 189 receiving yards on his three long touchdowns (48, 51, 90 yards) en route to finishing with 15 receptions for 292 yards.
Kyle Postma threw for 235 yards and one touchdown pass on 22-of-38 passing while Kyle Allen had Houston's fifth passing touchdown, part of a 6-of-11 day for 54 yards.
Blake Hirsch was Houston's leading rusher with 58 yards on 17 carries while Josh Burrell ran 14 times for 49 yards and one touchdown, a one-yard dive into the west end zone.
The Houston offense was without receivers Chance Allen, John Leday and Ra'Shaad Samples Saturday while running backs Duke Catalon, Kevrin Justice and Kaliq Kokuma were held out of the game. The defensive was without safety Garrett Davis, cornerback Brandon Wilson and linebacker Nomluis Fruge due to injuries. Receiver Steven Dunbar went down in Saturday's game with in-game x-rays returning negative, a full injury assessment for the junior was not available following the game.
