Softball Falls in Series Opener at USF

TAMPA, Fla. â€" Houston Softball dropped a 4-0 decision to South Florida in the series opener Friday evening.
The Cougars dropped to 16-17 on the year, 1-3 in the American Athletic Conference while the Bulls reached their 30th win of the season and stayed perfect in conference play.
Senior centerfielder slapped the Cougars first hit of the game just past the USF third baseman to extend her reached base streak to 34 consecutive games, dating back to the 2015 season.
Senior Courtney Klingler was hit by a pitch for the 10th time this season. Maya Thomas' 13-game hitting streak and 18-game reached base streak came to an end.
USF took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second off a base hit and a sacrifice fly to center. The Bulls added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth when right fielder Mia Fung hit a two-run home run over left field. USF scored its final run of the game on an RBI single through the left side.
Senior LHP Julana Shrum (6-5) took the loss for the Cougars. She threw 3.1 innings allowed three of the four runs scored while striking out two.
NEXT AT BAT
Houston Softball continues its series against USF on Saturday with a game at 4 p.m. (CT). The series finale is set for Sunday at noon. The Cougars return to Cougar Softball Stadium next weekend as they host McNeese State on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
