Softball Drops Heartbreaker to USF

TAMPA, Fla. â€" Houston Softball dropped a heartbreaker to first place USF, 6-3, in game two of the series Saturday evening.
The Cougars fell to 16-18 on the season, 1-4 in the American Athletic Conference while USF improved to 31-9, 5-0 in conference play.
Senior centerfielder Katie St. Pierre recorded her 14th and 15th stolen base of the season. She has reached 60 in her career and is just one shy of tying Jessica Valis (2006-09) for the school record. St. Pierre also reached base for the 35th straight game, dating back to last season.
Houston opened the game on a high note, taking a 2-0 lead. St. Pierre led off with a base hit into left field and stole second before freshman Elise LeBeouf roped her fifth home run of the season.
USF responded with four runs off a two-run double off the right field wall by Erica Nunn to take a 4-2 lead.
Houston cut the Bulls lead down to one the following inning freshman Brooke Vannoy hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Maya Thomas.
The Bulls went on to score two more runs to seal the 6-3 win.
Junior starting pitcher Shelby Miller (4-3) took the loss for the Cougars. She allowed three earned runs and a walk.
NEXT AT BAT
The series between Houston and USF concludes tomorrow at noon (CT). Houston Softball returns home next week to host McNeese State for a single game on Wednesday.
